A solo exhibition of works by
Washington, DC artist and visual poet
Robert Saunders
is planned for May. Saunders's work
treats art as language, relying on
letters, numbers, symbols and
intersecting lines (which remind us of
trains of thought or threads of
conversation), to communicate in stream
of consciousness form. The artist tests
notions of "appropriate" artistic media,
employing rubber stamps, found paper,
gel pen inks, raw plywood and other
unconventional media in his work.
Saunders was a participant in the
gallery's 2004 "5 x 5" exhibition.

Poetic License:
Mixed Media Works by Sondra Arkin and
Mary Beth Ramsey
Like most good friends, Washington, DC
artists Sondra N. A rkin
and Mary Beth Ramsey have similar
worldviews. Each believes that our lives
are shaped by a countless array of
emotions, experiences and other
influences that layer one upon another
to define us as individuals. How they
influence us affects how we influence
others. The layers become both a part of
us and a part of our legacies.
The
artists' approach to art is guided by
this notion of a layered life. Although
their styles have historically been very
different (Arkin's has been largely
abstract and Ramsey's has been more
rooted in literal imagery), each of them
builds her work one layer at a time,
remaining sensitive to the impact that
each layer has on the others. In a
sense, their art is a metaphor for life.
Success lies in balancing the layers and
controlling them in a way that favors
positive influences over negative ones.
The works in "Poetic License" reflect
the importance that both artists place
on legacy -how the many layers of
influence that shape our own lives
affect the impact we will have
on the world (and what we can do to try
to control the result). For this show,
the artists wanted to explore how
influence shapes outcome. Instead of
continuing on the individual artistic
paths that each of them has followed
until now, they agreed to work in a
style—mixed-media assemblage—that is new
to them, and they maintained a nearly
daily dialogue while preparing for the
show. By collaborating in this way, the
artists opened their work up to new
ideas and to the inevitable influences
of each other.
They have created a series of works that
incorporate bits of old letters,
photographs, diary entries (including
the artists' own), bible passages,
forgotten books, obscure poems, obsolete
typewriter parts and a variety of other
items that relate to the process of
creating and preserving legacy. The
artists selected items that had become
largely forgotten and gave them new
purpose. These items essentially reached
across time to say something to the
artists, and the artists have used them
to say something to us. By doing so,
they make the point that our own
relevance does not necessarily end when
we die. It is a hopeful message that
will live on for as long as these works
remain.

The
Nevin Kelly Gallery bids Farewell to
Dylan Scholinski
Dylan
Scholinski, one of
Washington’s most gifted artists, will
be moving to Denver in September. We
host a farewell gathering for Dylan on
August 24 from 6-9 pm. Several of
Dylan’s works will be on display and, to
help Dylan with the move, we will be
selling posters of his painting
"Patient" (the original cover image for
his book "The
Last Time I Wore a Dress").
Please join us to bid Dylan a fond and
memorable farewell.

Ellyn
Weiss: Circular Reasoning
A
solo exhibition for local artist
Ellyn Weiss
is planned for October. Weiss's pastels,
oil bar paintings, and prints are
characterized by layers of bold colors
in overlapping abstract shapes. The
shapes seem to morph into recognizable
forms and then quickly fade back into
abstraction. Weiss admires art that
communicates directly with the viewer,
without the need for rigid
interpretation. Her work is meant to be
evocative and somewhat inscrutable. It
conveys emotion without the encumbrance
of particular meaning; it bypasses the
brain and speaks directly to the soul.

Eugene
Healy: Paintings
A solo
exhibition for Connecticut artist
Eugene Healy, represented
by the Art Cabinet Nantucket, is planned
for November
2006. This is the third such
collaborative exhibit between the two
galleries. Healy works in a mixed media
technique, creating collage works of
bits of painted canvas and other
materials. He made his Washington debut
in the gallery's November 2003 group
show "Art Cabinet Nantucket in
Washington." We are pleased to have him
return for his first Washington, DC solo
show.

Color: Field Tests -
New Work by Sondra N. Arkin
Working in encaustic and mixed media
assemblage, Arkin explores the role that
combinations of color play in
communicating a sense of energy, mood
and depth. Her
examination of color's influence will not end with her efforts
in the
studio: she will select colors for
several of the gallery's walls, against which she will
hang works of similar size, composition
and palette. These works will combine to
form a larger installation that will
field test the ways in which individual
works affect—and are affected by—the
environment in
which they are placed.

Time of War: New Prints by Ellyn Weiss
Noted local
printmaker and painter,
Ellyn Weiss, unveils a series of 14"
x 14" monoprints made last summer at the Fine Arts Work
Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts on a press that was
once used by Robert Motherwell. The artist describes them as
"meditations on the pain of war, as simple and universal as
I can make them - my effort to convey feeling directly with
a minimum of complexity."

Murmur: A Series of
New Paintings by Mary Chiaramonte
Local
painter, Mary Chiaramonte, unveils a new series of paintings
called "Murmur". The paintings show the struggle to
"overcome life’s difficulties and limitations using the
image of individual attempts to escape from a box." Each
painting tells a different story.

Peer Pressure: Guest
Curated by Thom Flynn Featuring the Work of Sue Huang,
Carrie Mallory, Baby Martinez, and Pascual Sisto
Local
artist and guest curator Thom Flynn has assembled a group of
his peers to size-up contemporary trends in art. The exhibit
will feature artists Sue Huang (LA), Carrie Mallory (DC),
Baby Martinez (DC) and Pascual Sisto (LA). Flynn chose the
title
"Peer Pressure" to demonstrate the positive potential
of a concept that is generally perceived as negative.

H2O:
New Paintings by Michal Zaborowski
New paintings by award
winning Polish artist Michal Zaborowski

with water, endowing
his subjects with heroic import.

An Ideal
Mix-Up: A Winter Group Exhibition
A group exhibition that
includes works by the contemporary
Polish artists that helped launch the
gallery in May 2003 and the many local
artists who have joined the gallery
along the way. The exhibition celebrates
both the gallery’s origins and its
development as a platform for showcasing
emerging trends in local art. Unlike
most group shows, which remain static
during their entire run, works in this
show will be hung and re-hung in stages
as works are sold or anchor pieces are
moved to share the spotlight. The
exhibition will feature works by local
artists
Sondra Arkin,
Joan Belmar,
Ellyn Weiss,
Mary Chiaramonte
and Laurel Hauler and by Polish artists
Edward Dwurnik,
Darek Pala,
Krzysztof Kokoryn,
Pawel Król,
Lukasz Huculak
and Michal Zaborowski.

organized by the National Society of
Arts and Letters. The show consists of
works by 19 National Finalists from
competitions conducted by NSAL Chapters

National Career Award of $10,000 was
presented to local artist Jenny Davis
whose watercolor portrait will be a
featured attraction of the exhibit.
Jenny’s work was also exhibited in the
gallery’s Women’s Work show held in
spring 2007. The backroom of the gallery
will be hung with water media works by
gallery artists including Gretchen
Feldman, Molly Brose, and Jenny Davis.

Gretchen
Feldman: "stitches in time, etc."
New
paintings by Gretchen Feldman will be
featured in a solo exhibition. Feldman’s
abstract watercolors are influenced by

For some
time we have watched with concern,
anger, even fear, as the area of
personal privacy available to each of us
